Nokia Unveils Mobile TV Headset – Move to Boost Handset Sales?

Does the term mobile revolution ring a bell? Well if you have been following us regularly, you would have heard that term one too many times. With the mobile phone promising so much, and already delivering quite a lot, it is hard to imagine the things in stored for us in the future. As of now, we have some very interesting applications for the mobile phones and one of them is watching videos or movies on your handheld device. Keeping this in mind, Nokia have come out with the Nokia Mobile TV Headset that acts as a TV receiver for mobile devices.
This Nokia headset will use Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld (DVB-H) signals. Digita was awarded the license to operate DVB-H network in Finaland in March 2006. The company subsequently announced its tie-up with Nokia in May 2006 to provide the DVB-H network on Nokia devices. However, due to disagreements on copyrights of broadcasted content, the project was stalled.

Features of Mobile TV Headset
  • Compatible with the to-be-released Nokia N8 and other Symbian ^3 devices
  • Buttons to switch channels
  • Volume controls
  • Call-related functions
One advantage that DVB-H has over Web TV solutions is that it saps less of your battery.
Limitations for DVB-H
Unfortunately, DVB-H services are only available in a few select regions including Russia, New Delhi, Netherlands, and Helsinki. This would be the biggest hindrance in the success of the new Nokia headset.
Nokia still looking for revival?
We have in the past spoken about Nokia’s decline in market share and how the company was looking towards its smartphone lineup for revival. This is another effort in that direction to help gain back lost market share. Nokia seem to have targeted a very nascent market, however, the fact that the mobile TV headset can only be used with the new N8 and other Symbian^3 devices, coupled with the DVB-H restrictions, the target audience seems limited.
