Facebook becomes planning ground of teenager's murder

A 15-year-old schoolboy in Britain was killed in a merciless attack with samurai swords and machetes that was apparently planned on social networking website Facebook.

Sofyen Belamouadden was hunted down by an armed group of 20 teenagers before being stabbed nine times during rush hour at Victoria station, jurors at the Old Bailey court were told.

Mobile app industry to touch $15 Billion in 2011

The mobile applications industry will be ruled by Apple and Android mobile operating systems in the coming years and the mobile application store sale is expected to hit $15 billion in 2011, a new Gartner study reveals. The dramatic rise in sales is mainly due to the popularity of iPad and other tablet computers.

The total revenue made from mobile application downloads in 2010 was about $5.2 billion. The research firm predicts that the trend will continue to rise and in the next three years, the mobile app industry revenue will touch $58 billion.

Apple unveils iTunes 10.1.2 update


Apple has released a maintenance and stability update for iTunes - media-playing, iOS-device-syncing and app-shopping tool. The company's press release says "iTunes 10.1.2 provides a number of important stability and performance improvements."

iTunes 10.1.2 delivers certain improvements and support for the soon-to-be-released CDMA-based Verizon iPhone. The debut date for CDMA iPhone on Verizon is on February 10.

Scientists have developed a new phone application to identify potential paedophiles. The software, called Child Defence, enables kids to scan webchat on their mobile phones to verify the age of people they are messaging.

Designed by Isis Forensics based in Lancaster University, the software uses the latest advances in technology to identify language quirks peculiar to different age groups, a Daily Mail report said.

Google drops H.264 video, pushes WebM adoption in Chrome

Google has announced that it is withdrawing H.264 support from the HTML5 component in Chrome. This is in bid to promote the adoption of Google's internally developed WebM format and Ogg Theora.

Future PCs could work 20X faster with a 1000 core processor

In what could be a breakthrough for the computing world, scientists at the Glasgow University, Scotland have made a 1000-core processor. The team, led by Dr. Wim Vanderbauwhede, has made use of the Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) technology to make the processor.

The concept processor will enable computers to perform 20 times than what they do today. The FPGA lets the user to configure it into specific circuits, and not having to rely on factory settings. With this background, the team separated the transistors within the FPGA and placed them on 1000 mini circuits, each performing a different function.

Wipro to bring out India's fastest supercomputer

The Indian IT firm Wipro technologies on the process of making India's fastest super computer for ISRO. The super computer will be ready in three months and it is being built at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram. 

As of now, the fastest is Eka at the Computational Research Laboratories (CRL) in Pune. It was built in 2007. CRL is a subsidiary of Tata Sons working in the field of high performance computing services, and research and development. It uses Hewlett-Packard's(HP) supercomputing technology.

Motion sensing for PC revealed by Asus

Asus is bringing motion-sensing technology for your personal computers. The idea stems from Kinect's motion-sensing depth technology and is expected to bring 3D experience in the PC. The system called the WAVI Xtion will be unveiled at the CES this week. Asus said that the multi-media system will be available in the second quarter of 2011.
