what is gprs?

GPRS is a system of transferring information over the GSM mobile phone network in small packets. E.g. an email would be broken down into lots of little packets of information and then sent over the network. Each packet is given an extra bit of information that tells the network where it is meant to be going and how it fits into the overall structure of the original email. This means that the packets can be routed via different parts of the network taking advantage of spare capacity and re-assembled at the destination in the right order. This is exactly the same method used on the Internet for moving information around.

what is 3g?

3G Stands for 3rd-generation. Analog cellular phones were the first generation. Digital marked the second generation.
3G includes high data speeds, always-on data access, and greater voice capacity. The high data speeds are possibly the most prominent feature, and certainly the most hyped. They enable such advanced features as live, streaming video. There are several different 3G technology standards. The most prevalent is UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System), which is based on WCDMA (WCDMA and UMTS are often used interchangeably)

WAP - WIRELESS APPLICATION PROTOCOL

What Is WAP?
WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) allows mobile phones to send and receive information from the internet. On your PC you would use a browser program like Netscape or Explorer to surf the internet; on your mobile you use WAP. It's a communications standard that has been agreed by more than 200 telecommunications companies worldwide.
What does it do?
WAP is simply a way of providing interactive information services for mobile phones. A full page of a normal website wouldn't fit on your phone's small screen, but a WAPsite is designed specially for a mobile. You can do the same kind of things you would do on a website, but in a simplified, stripped-down way.
What can I use it for?
WAP technology brings a huge range of interactive information services directly to your phone - from TV and Restaurant listings to the latest financial news; from pop charts and film reviews to sports results, travel updates and even horoscopes. You can also use your WAP phone to send and receive email, to access information from your home or work computer. Very soon you'll be able to use it for shopping, banking and much more.

Tips to select a smart Phone

More models do end up confusing one about what to choose. Here are 7 tips to help you select one:

Yep, just as you have to decide between Linux and Windows on a PC, you will need to make up your mind about whether you would rather go for a Symbian, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, BlackBerry or Linux device and each OS also has its own sub-groups too (Symbian, for instance, has different editions of Series 60 and UIQ). The jury are still out on which one is the best, but you will need to keep in mind factors like speed of operation, number of applications available (preferably free ones) and compatibility with other devices, before you opt for a particular OS. Do remember that unlike in PCs, you cannot install any OS on any phone—so if you are dreaming of running a Symbian OS on an iPhone, forget it! Here you are pretty much stuck with the OS that comes on the device. No changes allowed.
While screen size is indeed important on all cellphones, it attains an entirely different dimension in the case of enterprise phones. This is because one often ends up viewing, documents, presentations and spreadsheets on enterprise devices and even browsing the Internet a fair bit. And the bigger the screen, the lesser the strain on your eyes and fingers.
Do you like touchscreens, physical keypads or a blend of the two? And even in physical keypads, do you want a proper QWERTY keypad, a semi-QWERTY keypad or just the good old alphanumeric affair? it all really depends on your needs. Toushcreen users normally end up with larger screens and the convenience of being able to scribble using a stylus, but have often to put up with iffy handwriting recognition systems and slightly lower battery performance. On the other hand, those with physical keypads often find the keys way too small to really replicate the convenience of a notebook but get better battery performance and more software applications to play around with. Suit yourself!

Diamond may replace silicon in computers

Diamond could be the next key component in making computers, as scientists in California are working on diamond-based computers. This new set of computers would store information millions of times more than the existing silicon-based systems and processes that information dozens of times faster, according to the scientists.

Commercially available technology has been used by the researchers in order to pattern large sheets of diamonds with tiny, nitrogen-filled holes. These diamond sheets, according to scientists, could be the basis for a supercomputer.

Nitrogen has been in diamonds for as long as there have been diamonds; it's why some diamonds have a yellow hue. For years scientists have used these natural, nitrogen-infused diamonds to study various aspects of quantum mechanics.

"We've used well-known techniques to create atomic-size defects in otherwise perfect diamonds," Discovery News quoted David Awschalom, a scientist at the University of California.

Now illegal tapping on mobile will be fined Rs.1 Crore

Samsung going to stop e-book production

Samsung, one of the leading Asian manufacturers of cell phones and memory chips, is going to quit the production of e-book readers or displays, saying it to be too costly, a recent report from Korea said.

According to a company spokesperson, Samsung will remain in the e-book reader market with a device that uses an LCD panel instead. The product is to be released next year.

Samsung unveiled the E6 e-book reader with a 6-inch e-paper display and Wi-Fi at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year. It was rumored to cost $400, which is likely to be a reason why the device never shipped.

Spies hacked U.S. military computers with a flash drive

Washington: An infected flash drive put in a U.S. military laptop in 2008 set off the most significant cyberattack ever against the military by a foreign spy agency, according to a top U.S. defence official.

The previously classified incident, which took place in 2008 in the Middle East, was disclosed by Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Lynn in an article titled "Defending a New Domain" posted on Foreign Affairs magazine's web site Wednesday.

This "most significant breach of U.S. military computers ever" served as "an important wake-up call" that led to a new Pentagon counterattack strategy dubbed Operation Buckshot, he wrote in the article also released by the defence department.

"An enormous amount of foundational work remains, but the U.S. government has begun putting in place various initiatives to defend the United States in the digital age," Lynn wrote.

"The flash drive's malicious computer code, placed there by a foreign intelligence agency, uploaded itself onto a network run by the U.S. Central Command," his article said.

"That code spread undetected on both classified and unclassified systems, establishing what amounted to a digital beachhead, from which data could be transferred to servers under foreign control."

He continued: "It was a network administrator's worst fear: a rogue programme operating silently, poised to deliver operational plans into the hands of an unknown adversary."

Lynn's article provided no details on specific files lost or stolen in the attack, which he called one of countless attempts to intrude into US military networks.

Software that can identify people from internet

Now, people can be identified from their images posted on the internet, as a software firm named Face.com has developed a facial recognition technology. The software, which is yet to be released, can help identify people on social networking sites and online galleries by comparing their images against known pictures of them.

The software works by creating an algorithm of the face, which is a measurement of the arrangement of features including the eyes, nose and mouth, according to the developers. The company further claimed that while scanning typical images which appear on social networking sites, the software is 90 percent accurate.

According to Gil Hirsch, Chief Executive of Face.com, the company has launched a service that allows developers to take its facial recognition technology and apply it to their own applications. The technology is already being used by 5,000 developers, Hirsch added.

Now laptop batteries can run for 3 years

Boston Power's Sonata batteries have brought a noticeable improvement in rechargeable batteries by bringing out batteries that can run for 3 years. Currently HP and Asus both offer three-year warrantees on the Sonata batteries with performance guarantee.

There aren't as many vendors offering Sonata-type batteries. HP started offering some in early 2009, either as an accessory pack or shipped as the standard battery. According to Boston Power, HP offers them, mostly as "the HP Long Life Battery Accessory," with fifteen commercial notebook models.

And Boston Power has just announced a deal with Asus, offering them standard with ASUS B Series notebooks. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, where run time degrades within two years or even one, says Sally Bament, VP of Marketing, Boston Power, Boston Power's maintain like-new run time for over three years: "Our chemistry guarantees that like-new run time for well over three years, based on cycle life."
"We support 90 percent charge in 90 minutes, and we can charge even faster, the cell can charge to 80 percent in 30 minutes," added Bament.

"There's no question that the longer battery life is important, and so is fast charge, once you have used a notebook long enough where these aren't the case," says analyst Bob O'Donnell, Vice President, Clients and Displays, IDC. "The challenge for Boston Power is that they are a small supplier, and larger vendors like HP often want to second-source, which isn't an option here."

Dell introduces $100 smartphone in U.S.

Dell has officially announced its entry into the U.S. smartphone market stating that its Aero smartphone is now on sale in the U.S. for $99 with a two-year AT&T contract. Dell has been an active player in the smartphone markets in China and Brazil since late last year.

The world's No. 2 personal computer maker, behind Hewlett-Packard, has been looking for ways to diversify its business as profit margins on traditional PCs have grown thinner and thinner. Dell also wants to stay relevant as more everyday computing tasks get done on smartphones instead of desktops and laptops.

The Dell Aero uses an older version of Google's Android operating system than many competing phones on the market today. The Aero uses version 1.5, also called "cupcake," while most phones now use version 1.6 or higher. Dell says it has done a significant amount of work adding features to the base Google system.

The Aero has a 3.5-inch touch screen and a 5-megapixel camera, and it has photo and video editing functions built in. Dell says the Aero can sync with Windows Media Player and music without copy protection from Apple's iTunes.

Now, make phone calls from your Gmail account

Google will now facilitate Gmail users to call telephones directly from their email. It will be in direct competition with Skype and traditional operators like AT&T and Verizon Communications.

After offering computer-to-computer voice and video chat services, Google will now allow calls to home phones and mobile phones directly from Gmail. Calls to the U.S. and Canadian phones from Gmail would be free of cost this year and for calls to other countries, there would be certain charges fixed at a lower rate. Google said calls to Britain, France, Germany, China and Japan would be as low as 2 cents per minute.

Soon, computer will read minds to search web

Imagine searching the internet simply by thinking. Well, your imagination may soon turn into reality, say scientists who claim to be developing a computer which reads human minds.

A team at Intel Corporation is working on a new technology which will directly interpret words as they are thought, unlike current brain-controlled computers which require users to imagine making physical movements to control a cursor on a screen.

In fact, the scientists are creating detailed maps of the activity in the brain for individual words which can then be matched against the brain activity of someone using the computer, allowing the machine to determine the word they are thinking, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Preliminary tests of the system have shown that the computer can work out words by looking at similar brain patterns and looking for key differences that suggest what the word might be.

Dean Pomerleau, of Intel Laboratories, said, "The computer uses a form of 20 questions to narrow down what the word is." So a food related word like apple produces activity in those parts of the brain related to hunger. So the computer can infer attributes to each word being thought about and this lets the computer zero down on what the word is pretty quickly.

Flash memory prices to slash by year end

To resurrect the dying market of SSDs, flash memory prices could drop to a dollar a gigabyte by the year end. However, iSuppli states that even this measure is not enough to kindle resurgence in SSDs.

At the start of the year, the prices were just over $2 for 1GB of standard NAND flash memory. This has reduced as much to reach $1.20 for a dense three-bit-per-cell chip by the fall and may get to just $1 by the end of 2010.
