Bharti Airtel Ties-Up With ip.access For Picocells – Readying For MNP?

A few days ago, Bharti Airtel took a big step towards customer satisfaction by stopping bulks SMS services. This was great news for customers of the telecom giants as more and more mobile users around India were troubled through such services. Being the first in the industry to do so has definitely given Airtel an edge over other services providers in the industry (though there might still be some disgruntled customers regarding service). Now in order to one up the customer satisfaction, Airtel have tied-up with UK-based ip.access to bring Picocell technology to our country.

What are Picocells?
How many times has it happened to you that you walk into an office building or a mall only to find that you have no network. This problem can be solved with picocells which are basically wireless communication systems that cover small areas like the ones mentioned earlier. In GSM networks, picocell base units connect to a base controller station, which in turn performs radio resource management and aggregates data that needs to be sent to a mobile switching center. Picocell is not the smallest of such devices with a femtocell taking away that credit.
Advantage for customers
As mentioned above, the number of dropped calls due to insufficient network coverage reduces drastically with this technology. Also, right now macro cell networks have to bear a lot of load which can now be shared to an extent by the new picocells which will again mean reduced dropped calls or unavailability messages due to network overload, especially during major events.
Advantage for Airtel
Considering that MNP is around the corner, increasing customer satisfaction through stopping bulk SMSes at first, and now by providing better service through picocell technology, Airtel might be looking forward to customers jumping on bard once MNP comes into the picture. Also, as the picocell base unit can take on some load from macro cell networks, the company will be able to focus on 2G and 3G.
