Facebook takes to facial recognition to identify friends

Facebook has gone on to enhance its face detection feature, launched in July, and has come up with a new feature called "tag suggestions". The new feature makes use of face recognition technology to suggest which friend is probably featured in which photo.

How it works is, say you have uploaded a huge number of photographs, Facebook will group together the faces that look similar, based on the premise that they are photos of the same person. Facebook also goes and looks into the past photo tags and suggests who in the picture.

Facebook named best U.S. employer

Social networking site Facebook is just as popular among its employees as it is among its users. The Silicon Valley start-up was named the best U.S. employer Wednesday by employment website Glassdoor.com, which conducted a survey among its users.

The company was so small last year that it did not even feature on the annual list, which was topped by Southwest Airlines in the past two years.
But Facebook has been growing rapidly by poaching employees from rivals like Apple and Google.

Besides offering handsome salaries and princely benefits, Facebook also offers employees the real prospect of becoming millionaires when the company, which is valued at $43 billion, goes public.

Many employees have already joined the elite millionaires' club by selling their shares in the company to private investors.

5 tips to maintain privacy online

In this information age, biggest challenge is how to manage privacy that too when you are online. Taking certain precautions one can maintain privacy.

Mark Milian of CNN provides 5 tips to maintain privacy:

1. Adjust social-network privacy settings

Facebook has made strides in simplifying its privacy settings, but their many options can still seem like a labyrinth. Still, it's worth going in there every once in a while and familiarizing yourself with how much of your information is shared with the world.
To get there, log in to Facebook, and type "privacy settings" into the search box. Facebook recently shrunk that feature to be accessible from a smartphone.

The settings page now offers quick toggles to decide whether your profile is shared just with approved friends, with their friends, too, or publicly. Because many people draw privacy lines differently, you can also fine-tune individual switches.

Taking a leap further, you can give the "super-logoff" trick a try. It's especially popular among young people.

Twitter, another popular social network, also lets you lock your account from public view. In settings, there's a feature called "protect my tweets."

2. Ensure personal data is sent over a secure connection

When sending credit card numbers, banking information and passwords, verify that there's an image of a padlock on the address bar of the browser. This denotes a secure connection to the site. This technology encrypts the data you send and receive, so it's difficult for anyone snooping on the line to access your info.

Google Earth integrates Street View's 3D maps

By combining two services, Google has now made it possible to pick points on the globe, look at them from outer space, and then zoom all the way in for a street-level view.

Google has done this by pulling its Street View out of browsers and integrating it with Google Earth. The combination will be available with the new version 6 of Google Earth, reported the company in its blog.

Until now, Earth's global perspective allowed people to view continents and countries with satellite imagery, while Street View allows detailed views of cities, streets and residential areas. The images for View were obtained by cars that travelled around the world with special round-view cameras mounted on top.

Now, TV can emit aroma that match the images

What about getting the smell of exotic food items shown in a cookery show? How about identifying the best flavor of perfume that is shown in the television? All these are going to be possible soon. Japanese scientists have developed a 'Smell-O-Vision' TV which they say could emit the exact smell of the picture on display. Something similar was developed in the U.S. in the '60s, with scents released from sachets hidden in the seats to make cinema audiences more engaged with the entertainment.

"We are using the ink-jet printer's ability to eject tiny pulses of material to achieve precise control ," said Lead Researcher Kenichi Okada of Keio University, Tokyo. The TV, according to scientists, will release a candy floss smell when the image shows a fairground and can even emit the briny scent of the seaside when people look at their holiday photos. The technology used in the television makes printers to spray small amounts of scent rather than ink.

just shake your mobile to find your way

Believe it or not! Now, just shake your phone and you will find your way. Mobile phone maps have guided people through streets around the globe. Now it has also taken a new turn by adding cellphone maps to help people find their way when they are inside mall or airport. In the map users will be able to see a floor plan of a shopping mall, with stores indicated by name, escalators, exits, restrooms and elevators marked in.

A New York based company MindSmack's FastMall, is one of the indoor mapping services. FastMall has a search engine to help users find stores on its maps and the service places a pin on the map to show the store's location. Tap the 'take me there' button and the service plots a route to the destination. To find the nearest restroom, all the users have to do is shake their phone.

The various mapping services differ in how they obtain their maps. Some get them from mall management companies or mall developers. Others use maps that are already available online or they copy ones posted on mall directories. Most of the indoor mapping apps are free, like PointInside, FastMall and Micello, which work on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. PointInside is also available for many Android phones.

Your computers could soon work without electricity

Your computers could soon work without electricity. Wondering how? Well researchers are working on a material which computers could use to recycle part of their own waste heat. The material, called gallium manganese arsenide, is a semiconductor.

Ohio State University researchers inform detecting an effect that can convert heat into a quantum mechanical phenomenon - known as spin - in a semiconductor.

If the phenomenon is developed, it can enable integrated circuits to run on heat, rather than electricity.

The research brings together two technologies together - thermo-electricity and spintronics. The team behind the research Joseph Heremans, Ohio Eminent Scholar in Nanotechnology, and Roberto Myers of the Ohio State University shared that they have been trying to combine spintronics with thermo-electronics - that is, devices that convert heat to electricity.

Heremans said, "Spintronics is considered as a possible basis for new computers in part because the technology is claimed to produce no heat. Our measurements shed light on the thermodynamics of spintronics, and may help address the validity of this claim."

Facebook, INQ joining hands to build smartphones?

Fresh rumors are doing the rounds that Facebook and INQ are coming together with two new smartphones. According to reports by Bloomberg, the smartphones will first release in Europe in the first half of 2011 followed by U.S. in the second half of the year.

Reports also add that the smartphones would run on the Android operating system. The smartphones are expected to highlight Facebook’s core features.

INQ in 2009 had unveiled the INQ1 which had built-in integration with Facebook, Skype, Yahoo, Google, eBay and Windows Messenger. Thereby, INQ marketed itself to be the world’s first social mobile handset maker.

Facebook in its statement to Bloomberg said, “We've been working with INQ for a couple of years now to help them build a deeply integrated Facebook experience on their devices. While we can't speak for their future product development plans, we can say that our view is that almost all experiences would be better if they were social."
