Umeox is a little known mobile phone company from China who have in-house end-to-end solutions such as R&D, ID and MT design, Tooling, SMT and Assembly lines. I learnt about Umeox recently and thanks to Mobile world congress, companies such as these as exposed to broader and global audiences. There is another little company in netherlands called Intivation - a company that specializes in solar energy conversion. Together Intivation and Umeox have released range of solar powered handsets. Yesterday, they unveiled a solar powered android phone that is affordable too! The handset is called UMEOX Apollo

Umeox Apollo 1 is a solar powered touch-screen android smartphone. The phones battery is constantly charged by high performance solar charger, thanks to intivations efficient technology. Umeox Apollo is not to be confused with Samsung Galaxy apollo, for the looks are strikingly similar too. Apollo is powered by Mediatek chipset and comes with all sorts of connectivity options such as 3G, GPRS, WCDMA, Bluetooth and USB. Has 512 MB RAM and has micro-SD slot that can support upto 32 GB of external memory. The battery has a capacity of 1300 mAH. The handset is very lightweight at 100 grams. That's a surprise taking into account the inbuilt solar charger.

The solar charger can charge an empty battery in 17 hours. It has an efficiency of 16% and a surface area of 24cm square.

What more the handset is housed in a rugged casing making it suitable for rough and tough handling. The handset is supposedly priced at 100$ price. Very interesting offering and one that will definitely appeal to asian countries.
